{"id":82,"date":"2017-02-28T16:17:48","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T21:17:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/?p=82"},"modified":"2017-02-28T16:17:48","modified_gmt":"2017-02-28T21:17:48","slug":"pipe-cleaner-phylogenetic-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/2017\/02\/28\/pipe-cleaner-phylogenetic-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Pipe Cleaner Phylogenetic Trees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the the misconceptions that students tend to keep coming back to when learning about evolution is the idea that\u00a0organisms evolve &#8220;into&#8221; one other (so to speak) rather than branching off from common ancestors. \u00a0This is why you commonly hear the questions, &#8220;Did we evolve from monkeys?&#8221; or, &#8220;If we came from monkeys then why are monkeys still around?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In order to attempt to address this misconception, last semester I started doing an activity as part of my evolution unit to help students better understand phylogenetic trees and evolutionary relationships. \u00a0The activity is in three phases:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Phase 1 &#8211; students examine &#8220;passport&#8221; cards that different runners got during a race. \u00a0Every time the runners took a different path (which here is a metaphor for a new trait or branch of evolution), they got a different stamp. \u00a0The students reconstruct the race map based on the passport stamps.<\/li>\n<li>Phase 2 &#8211; students examine different animal cards with different traits printed on them that each of the animals have. \u00a0They fill in a chart listing which traits go with which animal. \u00a0(These traits happen to match the stamps the runners had on their passports as well).<\/li>\n<li>Phase 3 &#8211; students make a phylogenetic tree for the animals out of pipe cleaners that is a 3D representation of the race map they drew in phase 1.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I love this activity because by the time students are at phase 3 I start to hear a lot of &#8220;oh ok&#8221; and &#8220;oh I get it&#8221; going around the room. \u00a0I think that even though most of my students could answer a multiple choice question about a phylogenetic tree without this activity, they don&#8217;t truly understand what the branch points represent until they actually go through the process of building one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the the misconceptions that students tend to keep coming back to when learning about evolution is the idea that\u00a0organisms evolve &#8220;into&#8221; one other (so to speak) rather than branching off from common ancestors. \u00a0This is why you commonly<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":460,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-82","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/82","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/460"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=82"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/82\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":83,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/82\/revisions\/83"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=82"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=82"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-acrowell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=82"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
