{"id":19,"date":"2016-06-25T12:33:29","date_gmt":"2016-06-25T16:33:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/?p=19"},"modified":"2016-06-25T15:05:40","modified_gmt":"2016-06-25T19:05:40","slug":"teaching-by-example","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/2016\/06\/25\/teaching-by-example\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching by Example"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the beginning of every school year, I share the following quote with my students, &#8220;You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.&#8221; \u00a0It&#8217;s the most important thing I say them. \u00a0I want my kids to know that courage is way more important than anything I teach them about language arts. \u00a0Because really, I think it&#8217;s a building block of learning.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve met so many brilliant students who have so many abilities, but they don&#8217;t have anyone to offer them the gift of confidence- the ability to step out into the unknown.<\/p>\n<p>But, it&#8217;s easy for me to ramble on to them about courage and then continue on with my normal routine. \u00a0And perhaps they are thinking the same thing- &#8220;That&#8217;s easy for you to say, Mrs. Derstine. \u00a0You are already doing what you want with your life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then, a colleague tells me about the opportunity to become a Kenan Fellow&#8230; enter an opportunity to &#8220;lose sight of the shore.&#8221; \u00a0Here is my opportunity to become a better teacher. \u00a0And, it has everything to do with stepping outside my comfort zone. \u00a0I mean, after all I&#8217;m a language arts teacher jumping into a STEM fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>In the midst of all the &#8220;unknowns,&#8221; \u00a0I&#8217;m trying to focus on the ocean of opportunity in front of me. \u00a0And, while that might sound cheesy, it&#8217;s true. \u00a0I&#8217;m hoping to become a more well-rounded individual and teacher. \u00a0To me, science is the perfect way to do this.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I feel like my kids get so excited about the hands-on experience in their science labs, and I wonder about the &#8220;draw&#8221; that science holds on so many people. \u00a0Why do they get so excited? \u00a0I&#8217;m determined to find out and apply that excitement to the classroom. \u00a0Maybe in some way it will help me to reach at least one of my students in a new way. \u00a0Even further, maybe if I can just touch these new waters, I&#8217;ll be encouraging another teacher to do the same. \u00a0Yes, I&#8217;m terrified to fail or maybe even more terrified of being mediocre&#8230; but, don&#8217;t my students have the same fears? \u00a0If I can&#8217;t put myself out there, they never will.<\/p>\n<p>So I guess, here&#8217;s to taking one step forward and leaving the shore&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the beginning of every school year, I share the following quote with my students, &#8220;You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.&#8221; \u00a0It&#8217;s the most important thing I say them.&hellip; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":462,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[6,5,4,8,7,3,2,9,10,11],"class_list":["post-19","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-comfort-zone","tag-confidence","tag-courage","tag-cross-curricular","tag-hands-on","tag-language-arts","tag-middle-school","tag-ocean","tag-shore","tag-students"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/19","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/462"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=19"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/19\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":30,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/19\/revisions\/30"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=19"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=19"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/old.kenanfellows.org\/2017-gderstine\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=19"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
